Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Laser Treatment, Harley Street, London

Private IPL Treatments

At The Devonshire Clinic we use intense pulsed light (IPL) treatments to treat skin problems ranging from medical conditions such as rosacea, redness, thread veins and sun damage to cosmetic issues such as lines, wrinkles, pigment irregularities and age/sunspots. Our highly qualified dermatologists provide safe and effective IPL therapy at our private clinic in the Harley Street area of London.

Our Consultant Dermatologists are leading skin experts with in-depth knowledge of how IPL can be used to improve the appearance of the skin. Within medical dermatology we recommend IPL treatments to patients with thread veins, rosacea and bothersome skin flushing to reduce redness, restoring the skin tone to more closely match the surrounding normal skin.

Treating thread veins

The IPL treatment involves light bursts which are absorbed by the blood in the small surface blood vessels. This causes local heating within the blood vessels that destroy them, but the treatment causes minimal damage to the surrounding tissue. Your body absorbs what is left of the heated thread veins over the next days and weeks.

You may experience some discomfort during your IPL treatment. The appearance of the skin continues to improve for several weeks after IPL treatment so the full extent of the improvements in thread veins may not be apparent immediately.

The number of treatments and the spacing of treatments will depend on the severity of your thread veins but four to six treatments given a month apart is a typical schedule for intense pulsed light treatments.

Treating rosacea

Rosacea is a condition that leads to facial redness, flushing and dilation of tiny blood vessels in the skin on the nose and cheeks. IPL treatment for rosacea works in the same way as for thread veins but the treatment area is usually more extensive.

Reducing skin flushing

By removing some of the superficial tiny blood vessels in the face that swell with blood when you become warm, IPL can reduce embarrassing episodes of facial flushing, improving your confidence in social situations.

Frequently Asked Questions IPL Treatment

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) treatment uses high-intensity bursts of visible light. It’s a non-invasive (non-surgical) way to improve the appearance of your skin and it can be used for medical and cosmetic problems. You’ll normally see visible improvements within a few days, continuing for several weeks.

IPL can be used to treat freckles, age spots, facial wrinkles, unwanted hair, and other skin-related problems such as rosacea, (visible broken blood vessels on your face that often appear along with small pink or red bumps), as well as visible red thread veins on your legs.

IPL treatment is used to treat many skin conditions, including:

  • Sunspots/damage
  • Age spots
  • Pigment irregularities
  • Some vascular and flat-pigmented birthmarks
  • Broken blood vessels
  • Spider veins
  • Thread veins
  • Discoloured/flushed/red skin
  • Fine wrinkles
  • Freckles
  • Rosacea
  • Scars
  • Acne

Some patients experience a slight stinging or warming sensation during IPL treatment. Some people describe the pain as being ‘pinged’ with an elastic band, or pinched. Any discomfort can easily be treated with a soothing gel. However, not everyone finds they can deal with this level of pain.

Everyone is different, but most patients need up to six IPL treatments for brown spots (also known as lentigines). Your dermatologist at The Devonshire Clinic will explain your options and discuss the best treatment to treat brown spots during your initial consultation.

Broken capillaries, or blood vessels, look like spidery red blotches around your cheeks, eyes, or nose. They’re sometimes called thread veins or spider veins.

The number of IPL treatments you’ll need to improve your skin depends on various factors but, in most cases, the best results are achieved in three to five treatments. Your skin may not look better straight away, it may take a little while.

You may experience some swelling after your IPL treatment: skin around the treated area may also peel and redden, causing pain. Any soreness typically goes away within a few days, while the redness may take a little longer.

Each session of IPL typically takes 20-30 minutes. You’ll typically have 4-6 sessions with treatments administered every 3-6 weeks. After each session, you should be able to get back to your everyday activities, although some people experience minor side-effects.

Your consultant dermatologist at The Devonshire Clinic will discuss what’s involved in treating your condition and answer any questions you may have. They’ll be able to advise on how to get the most from your treatments – including staying out of the sun for a couple of weeks before and after your sessions.
