Microdermabrasion and Microneedling
Cosmetic Skin Care Treatment
Microdermabrasion and microneedling are two non-surgical cosmetic dermatology treatments that help to rejuvenate facial skin. We provide both microdermabrasion and microneedling treatments at our clinic in the Harley Street area of London.
Microdermabrasion and microneedling can be used within a bespoke programme of skin improvements that leave your skin looking smoother, fresher and younger. As with our other cosmetic dermatology treatments, our microdermabrasion and microneedling therapies are delivered safely and effectively by our highly trained expert dermatologists.
Microdermabrasion is a non-invasive technique that we use to remove dead cells that build up on the skin surface. When you look at your skin, what you see is the layer of dead cells that are produced as part of the natural regeneration cycle within the skin.
If this top layer becomes clogged with dead cells that are not removed effectively, the skin can start to look dull and lose its natural glow.
Microdermabrasion gently removes the outermost layer of cells leaving the skin looking fresher and healthier. Of all the cosmetic dermatology treatments you can have, microdermabrasion is one of the safest and the least disruptive both to your skin and to your life. It is possible to have a treatment in your lunch hour of after work and no-one will be the wiser.
What does microdermabrasion involve?
Microdermabrasion uses a fine stream of particles to gently erode the skin cells, which are carried away by a vacuum attached to the applicator.
This is not uncomfortable but will leave you feeling flushed or ‘wind-burnt’ for a short time after the treatment.
Most people usually require between five and ten treatments. The improvements are small and continue between sessions and for the weeks afterwards. Therapy sessions are booked every two to four weeks initially, followed by monthly maintenance to keep your skin in the best condition possible.
Microneedling is a facial skin rejuvenation technique in which many tiny sterile needles are used on a small area of skin. The tiny pinpricks stimulate recovery mechanisms in the skin, increasing the production of collagen by fibroblasts.
By encouraging the body’s own repair mechanisms, microneedling is an effective technique within our skin rejuvenation armoury. There are home devices on the market but at The Devonshire Clinic, we advise against using these because of the risk of introducing infection. Microneedling at our central London skin clinic is always done by highly trained medical staff, giving you complete peace of mind.
The device used to deliver microneedling looks a bit like a pen – the tip contains the tiny needles and is used to target specific areas of skin. The fine lines around the eyes and the upper lip, for example, can improve considerably after microneedling treatment.
The microneedling technique is used by our Consultant Dermatologists to treat fine lines and wrinkles as well as shallow acne scars. Other treatments are recommended for deeper scars, such as the ice pick scars that can result from acne.
