Professor Chris Griffiths is Adjunct Professor of Dermatology, King’s College London, Consultant Dermatologist, King’s College Hospital and Emeritus Professor of Dermatology University of Manchester. He qualified in medicine from St Thomas’ Hospital Medical School and trained in dermatology in London and Michigan. Chris was appointed to the Foundation Chair in Dermatology at the University of Manchester in 1994 where he established the Manchester Centre for Dermatological Research and the Manchester Psoriasis Service. He has received many awards for his work including OBE “for services to dermatology” in the 2018 Queen’s New Year Honours. He is an NIHR Emeritus Senior Investigator and a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences.
Chris is a former President of the European Society for Dermatological Research, the European Dermatology Forum, the British Association of Dermatologists, and the International Psoriasis Council, which he co-founded in 2004, and directs the MRC Stratified Medicine Consortium on psoriasis – PSORT. He is Editor-in-Chief of Rook’s Textbook of Dermatology and is the third most cited dermatologist in the world.
Chris has a career-long research interest in all aspects of psoriasis including being part of the team that showed psoriasis to be an immune-mediated disease. In Michigan he elucidated the mechanism of action of topical retinoids for repair of photoaged skin and maintains a strong research interest in skin ageing including helping Boots develop the No.7 range. He is active in global health dermatology including directing the Global Psoriasis Atlas and co-founded, with Dr Su Lwin, the Burma Skincare Initiative UK-registered charity
